So my new year's resolution this year is to make more music in more places and have more fun doing it than ever before....and I can't do that last one without you.  That's right...without you there will be no fun, with you...we're going to have a blast!

Just a quick note to mention that we won't be able to do the wise daughters show this year - unfortunately we were a bit slow in responding to them and the spot was filled...90% of success is responding quickly...lesson learned.  You should still go check them out - They are a great craft market in the junction (Toronto) that has unique items you won't find anywhere else!  http://www.wisedaughers.com

So it was the whole rag tag bunch of us down at rehearsal last night.  We rehearsed at Cherry Beach Studios (one of the longer running recording studios in the city) in one of their pro rehearsal rooms.  It's always nice to practice there, because they have everything set up - you just walk in and play.  There are 10 rehearsal rooms and they're usually full so with 2 practice blocks in the night, that's as many as 20 bands a night getting ready for gigs or to record an album or just for fun.  Man it was hot in the room last night - and I'm not just talking about the music!

In spite of what the poster said - Morgan is still kicking it on the bass
Billy and Sarah brought some songs into the mix - and were sounding awesome
Tex (missed you brother) was back at it on his beautiful Gretsch
And Sean - keeping us all together.  Love it.

Great rehearsal (I lost track at 15 songs I think...)

I love this whole web thing, I think it's a great idea that just might catch on, it's a great way to keep in touch with everyone, and every day that I open it I hope for some little surprise and recently I had a couple.  Here's how I met Tyler Gilbert...

I wasn't offered a billion dollars by the heir to a fortune in Nigeria, but I was checking my email one night and I received a great greeting from a singer songwriter in Regina. He mentioned that he was touring Canada and that he would like for me to join him for a few of his shows in Ontario. My first reaction was to quickly email him back to tell him how much I would enjoy that, but then I thought...I should really call this guy! So I did (he had conveniently given me his number).

Tyler picked up the phone and said hello and I introduced myself and he was so happy to hear from me. We spoke for about a half hour, and I learned about how he wes in Regina and that he and his friend T.B Judd were climbing into their van to travel across the country making music. He found me through some social networking sites that I use, and now we're playing a couple of shows together. I love how small the world is getting. The same day I had a chat on facebook with a fan in Germany asking when I was touring there and suggesting venues that would be good for me to play and not to long ago, I also got a message from India inviting me there... and last but not least, Marcus Walker invited me to play at his great Tuesday night gig at Graffiti's (all in one week...) they just may have something with this interweb thing...

Please if you can, come out to one of these shows to support these fellas driving across the country...gas isn't cheap these days and it would be nice to show them some Ontario hospitality. As an added bonus (WAIT..there's more)...Lucas Stagg is a local guy that puts on a fantastic show.

Oh yea...and I'll be doing my very best for you up on stage as well.

I'm glad you asked...Also good news with The Rag Tag Billy Bobs...we're rehearsing again - and with a whole new crop of songs, so you can expect us to pop up soon with some shows with the whole stinkin lot of us real soon

So my regular Tuesday night gig at the Seanachai has been bumped up (or down...or sideways) depending on how you look at it...to Wednesdays.    And this week was my first week back at it after having travelled for the last 4 weeks to New Orleans, Detroit, Nashville and Omaha (home of a bar that boasts the largest selection of single malt scotch in the US - over 750 single malts available).

I wasn't really sure what to expect, since I only confirmed the date the night before - what a great night it turned out to be!  First of all, I had a full band lineup:  Sean Murphy on drums, Morgan Jones Phillips (just back from touring with Broken Social Scene) on Bass, Billy Young brought out his Electric Guitar (and I think he wishes he had left it there...more on that later...) and we had another Bill (Tex) on electric/acoustic.  Even Sarah came by later and sang back up vocals on the last 2 sets.  There were other musical guests, as usual as well.

The Seanachai has recently done a complete revamping of their menu (and they have an awesome wing special on Wednesdays now...) and the place was full!

It was a great night, and I hope you can make it out to the next one - see you next Wednesday.

Some people have been telling me that my notes to you have been a little too cryptic, so I apologize if this letter to you seems a little less personal than normal.  Tuesday nights at the Seanachai down on the Danforth have been so much fun - I've met some great people and enjoy playing to the regulars that come by every week as well as the people that have dropped in for a pint because they're new to the neighbourhood and are checking things out or that just heard the music and decided to stop.

Last night was great - Like I do every week I just saddle up and start playing my songs like it is the last chance I'll have to play them.  This week I started with New York Tuesday, an obvious choice for a Tuesday as well as Confidence - both songs that I recorded with Endsville.  I also played some older stuff from City So Cold.  I'm really enjoying the reinterpretation of those songs as well as the introduction of new songs.  The Seanachai has been a great venue to introduce new tunes.

So here's what I'm hoping...

I'd love it if more of my musician friends would stop by from time to time - you're all welcome to get up and play a few tunes, maybe I can sit in with you?
I'd also love to see more people come by - the Seanachai is a great little pub with super friendly people and they deserve the support.  It's right smack dab between the Donlands and Greenwood Subway stations, so it's really easy to get there.  I go on at 8 and usually play sets at 8, 10 and 11.

I just want to send a quick hello to some of the new folks I met last night Mary - who will be setting up a massage therapy practice in the area, Scott and Robert who decided to stay for 15 more minutes around 9:30 and were still there when I left at 12:30, and also to Laura...who's not new, but deserves a shout out - you're doing a great job..nice whistle!

Dear Tuesday,

Why do you tease me?  An empty room is not what I hoped for, but at least you sent a pretty girl on a motorcycle to keep me company.  
I could only roll up the garage door and sing out to the street, calling out for someone to join me, and sure enough you didn't disappoint.  

So wonderful to sing with Sarah and Billy, and a chorus of voices on the patio asking "where did all the light come from?" - only missing Morgan. Old man and Naveed - thank you.

Even as the engine roared and her motorcycle raced off into the night; Tuesday you and I sang together until there was no more (beer or time)

I miss you already.  We had such a good time last night.  Enjoying a win by TFC, the guys were in the back room playing darts and the usual suspects on the patio and at the bar.  I wooed you with my best interpretations of songs that I wrote for you long ago.   When Billy arrived everyone poured out onto the patio and we turned it up a bit.  Just enough to warrant a visit from 54 - checking to make sure that the dance club incident from last week wasn't going to re-occur....

We are getting to know eachother so much better - can't wait to see you again next week.

I like you because I don't know exactly what to expect - you have a sense of adventure that I find, well, charming. 

You are warm and embracing and yet strong.  When that guy was getting too close, and all drunk and stupid, you stepped in, in spite of your bum leg and your cane and you defended me.

When life stinks, it doesn't doesn't take you long to make it better.

And at the end of it all, you listen, and as the night fades into blackness, we find comfort in one another, and we're happy and drunk with the energy that we create together.

At any rate - it was a good time, great people.  As always the guys at the Seanachai were awesome.  It took a while to get things figured out (sound system, where I should be, what songs to do) - but next week will go easier because I know the lay of the land now.  I just want to make this a really great night for everyone that comes in, and for the guys at Seanachai.

I played a lot of songs last night - I don't know how many exactly, but it must have been 25 originals... and a few covers.
I also debuted a new song - it's not done yet, but I thought I'd try it out.

Looking forward to next week.

Days like this remind me of when my wife and I first met - we'd often go out after work, have a bite to eat, have a few drinks and generally enjoy the night - you can hear a song I wrote about that (while I was away in Calgary) here

It's a really lousy recording that I did with a drum machine and an old laptop (so don't expect too much)  but the sentiment is there.

So, I'm putting it out there - where would you like me to play?  Realistically it needs to be somewhere within an hour or two drive of Toronto, and it needs to be either Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday.  But other than that, if you can pull a group of people together and you want me to play some tunes and time allows.. I'm in.
